The Birthday Rock

Posted by shiokenstar on January 30, 2008

So last Saturday was the birthday party of my friend Peter. We mainly knew each other through my friend Dustin, so I was surprised to find I was invited to the party. On either Wednesday or Thursday of last week, I was wating for the Magnet bus at the Silver Creek bus turnaround, when I see Peter getting dropped off. He askes me if I would like to go, and I simply said yes. Done and done.

Now, to secure a ride. Now as some of you know, I often am not allowed to go places because of my tendency to tell my parents about things like, an hour before I have to leave. I told myself to tell my parents, but I forgot until Friday night. Being the sneaky ninja that I am, I asked my parents if I could go to Dustin’s house, not Peter’s. Usually, my parents hate it when I hang out at friend’s house because they have trouble seeing road signs at night when it time to pick me up. However, my parents’ are accustomed to taking me to Dustin’s house. So, knowing that Dustin would be going to Peter’s, I asked for a ride to Dustin house, from which I would spend the night, then go over to Peter’s to enjoy some merriment. My parent’s agreed, except that it was raining and windy on car swaggering levels, so I had rescheduled for Saturday morning instead.

The party itself was really fun. A basic progression of it went, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Rockband, poker (no real money), Rockband, food break, Rockband, movie break (Saw 4), Rockband, Rockband, cake break, Rockband, haha. Rockband is really fun :3. I like the singing part, but I only knew like, 3 songs haha. I had alot of fun overall. There was also Youtube video viewing and one ridiculously long game of Uno which I simply gave up on.

The Youtube video was one of the funniest things I had ever seen. It was the Super Mario Frustration video, the one with the hacked Super Mario levels that are damn near impossible to beat. Not only was the sheer ridiculousness of the video funny, but the guy providing the commentary was hilarious as well. Youtube or Google it people, I’m too lazy to grab the link.

Well, that’s about it haha. I’m not sure what to do about my own up and coming birthday party. The actual day is February 10th, but I’m not sure what day to actually have the party. I’ll just ask around on AIM or something to get a good idea on fitting the most people.

2008 Off to a bad, sad start

Posted by shiokenstar on January 27, 2008

A return to the blogging scene after a break. On a side note, If you haven’t noticed by now, I like to come up with intriguing titles and explain them. Well let’s go.

January 16, 2008 I hear news that my grandfather on my mother’s side has passed away. I had never met either of my grandfathers: my dad’s dad died before I was born and my mom’s family is mostly still in Vietnam. I have never been to Vietnam.

I wasn’t told the exact details of his death. Upon hearing this, my mother made plans to leave for Vietnam the next day, which she did. She was visiby shaken, but not overly movie style dramatic tears. I, on the other hand, felt differently.

It’s kinda strange. I wasn’t sure how to react when I heard the news, and I’m not sure how to react now. I mean, I had never met him before, yet people usually feel sad/depressed when someone related to them dies. How would you, my few readers, feel in a situation like this?

On top of this, sometime around late December/early January, my grandmother (on my father side) was admitted to the hospital, ICU (Intensive Care Unit). She was in there for a recurring health problem: fluid in her lungs. It’s not TB for those of you jumping the gun, but it has happened before. Since that day, my dad/mom/siblings/relatives have been taking shifts being at her bedside due to her inability to speak and comprehend English. She cycled from ICU, to a regular room, then back to ICU when the regular room’s aided breathing machine wasn’t quite up to scratch with her illness.

But now, and I just learned this, my grandmother has been diagnosed with intestinal cancer.

This year is getting off to a horrendously rocky start.

French Toph = Cute

Posted by shiokenstar on January 7, 2008

Warning: Shiokenstar entering fanboy mode for the duration of this entire blog entry.

Ok it’s a weird title, I know, but seriously, she is. I don’t mean some French filly cosplaying as Toph; I’m not sure crazy about Toph that I’ll resort to cosplayers. As I have stated before, Toph Bei Fong is my favorite character of Avatar, and I just love her personality. But here’s the skinny on the title name.

When I first got the Avatar Season 1 box set, after watching my select favorite episodes, I put the set away somewhere in my room. This usually equals in me no longer touching said object for many eons. However, when I found out the boxset special features included the unaired pilot of Avatar (pilots are first episodes used to pitch to tv networks or manga companies to give said companies something to consider airing/publishing) , I scoured my messy room and rediscovered the set. After watching the pilot, which was slightly less impressive than I had hoped since the director’s commentary is not optional and pretty much blocks out a lot of the sound, I decided to see what other special features there were. Turns out, I get a choice of language to listen to: English, Spanish, and French.

I remind you, this all takes place way before Christmas and my dreams of Avatar Season 2 boxset. Anyways, deciding to give my French comprehension a whirl, I popped in the DVDs and prepared myself for some French dubbing. Man it was some good stuff. It was funny listening to the voices, but they fit, really well. I really can’t tell since I don’t speak French fluently, but the French voice actors played their parts well. Although, since I knew what most of the lines were, I wasn’t really listening to the French since I could just call on memory. The one thought that crossed my mind though, was “I wonder what Toph sounds like in French?” This one of the reasons I so desperately wanted to get Season 2 DVDs.

Well, my wish came true Christmas morning, but I wasn’t until recently (a few days ago) that I listened to the French version of episode 24, The Swamp. Now I know what you’re thinking, Toph didn’t have a speaking role until episode 26, The Blind Bandit. True, but Toph does a lot of giggling, not laughing at someone the way she normally does, but straight up giggling in ep 24. I know at least one girl reads my blog, and I want to make sure she knows the effect that a girl’s giggle has. It’s pretty potent in sending your cute factor through the roof.(This has to be an understatement since anything closer to the truth would just sound dirty)

Anyways, I was listening to the episode and not watching this time around. I wanted to truly test my French this time around. (On a side note, I couldn’t understand jacksquat. How do French people talk so damn fast?!?!) But since I couldn’t understand, I couldn’t tell when Toph would make her giggling appearance. As soon as I heard it though, I literally jumped up(from a lying on my back with eyes closed position) and stared open mouthed at the tv. After listening to Toph’s very first few lines in The Blind Bandit, I had decided that French Toph was the cutest girl I had ever heard, which made Toph oh so more awesome.

I’m not sure how to describe it, but it was very pleasant in my ears. It’s not cute like Hamtaro, San Rio, girly girl cute, and it’s definitely not an erotic seductress sounding voice. It’s like, a really cute tomboyish girl is speaking with a slightly arrogant tone. She sounds like she’s trying to act tougher than she looks, while at the same time giving you a sneaking suspicion that she really is. If you’ve read the wikipedia article on Toph, then this sound sound familiar to you, but that just means the French voice actress did a really good job, non?

As a side note, the fictional characters I go fanboy mode(not like a yaoi fangirl mind you, just an overenthusiastic fan) into are: Raven from Teen Titans, Toph Bei Fong from Avatar, Hinata Hyuga from Naruto, Ivy Valentine from Soul Calibur, Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell, and Alucard from Hellsing. To a lesser extent are: Kira from Deathnote, Iori Yagami from King of Fighters, Hachibei Maeda from Ai Kora/Love College, and Hiden from Naruto. These characters are awesome, period. (lol there’s one now!)

Edit: Lol forget the timestamp. Oh well, not too much time has passed. I’ll just add it now.
